The band
Nineteen chairs, one book
The Big Time Jazz Orchestra has been Duluth's big band since 1990. The chairs are held by college and school music instructors, former military band musicians, and working players from around the Twin Ports.
The band is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Concert proceeds go to area music programs and charities, and every year the band plays shared concerts and workshops with school and university jazz bands.
The book covers Thad Jones, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Brookmeyer, Gordon Goodwin, and Maynard Ferguson, next to originals written inside the band. Two albums of that material are out now.
